Office Hours FAQ
Everything you need to know before you drop in.
What are office hours?
Office hours are hosted by high-scoring tutors as a space for you to drop in and ask any questions you have about the MCAT. Each session is tagged with the subjects the tutor can help with, and you can drop in at any point during the session to ask about those sections. It isn't structured like a traditional classroom or tutoring session — it's an opportunity to study with, and ask specific questions to, a high scorer.
Who are the tutors?
Our tutors have all scored in the 90th percentile (515+) or higher on the MCAT. Tutors pick the subjects they feel most comfortable teaching, often ones where they scored 130+. We prioritize teaching you how to improve — test-taking skills, passage analysis, and study planning advice — but we aren't able to walk you through every step of the process. Keep in mind our tutors are human and may not be able to answer every question. Tutors are also available for questions outside of office hours on Discord.
How can I get the most out of office hours?
Come prepared with specific practice questions or topics you missed and need help understanding. This maximizes the time tutors can spend reviewing and teaching, though we can still work through things together. If you'd like to go through a passage set for the first time, we'll likely ask you to read and answer the questions independently first so we can see how you approach them without giving away the answers. The goal of office hours is to deepen your understanding of a topic or refine how you approach questions and passages. Most often, a tutor will have you share your screen, go through the passage or questions you want help with, and review the thought process behind the answer you chose.
I don't have any specific questions. Can I still come?
Yes! We encourage students to attend even if it's just to listen. You may not have questions in mind, but over the course of a session topics will naturally come up that you'll want to discuss. Office hours are a chance to learn from both your tutor and each other.
Do I need to be on camera?
No. Our tutors keep their webcams on throughout the session so we can communicate and connect with you, but we never require students to do anything they aren't comfortable with. Turning your camera on makes it easier to interact with tutors, but it's completely optional.
Can tutors help me plan how to study?
Yes. Tutors can answer questions about building a study plan, including which materials to use and how to schedule your prep, so feel free to drop in with those questions. Different tutors may give different advice, so figure out what works best for you. Ultimately, what matters most is putting in a significant number of meaningful study hours rather than perfecting the method. We can help guide you, but the studying itself is up to you.
